NEW YORK (TRI) — With just hours left in 2025, tourists are pouring into Times Square in record numbers, drawn to the world’s most famous New Year’s Eve party and a special patriotic twist marking the start of America’s 250th anniversary year.
The Crossroads of the World is bracing for around one million revelers to pack the streets on December 31, with millions more watching live around the globe. This year’s celebration promises extra spectacle: after the traditional midnight ball drop, the iconic crystal sphere will be relit in red, white, and blue at approximately 12:04 a.m., rising once more above the glowing “2026” numerals to kick off the nation’s semiquincentennial.
Tourism Surge Fuels the Excitement
New York City’s tourism sector has roared back in 2025, with projections of more than 68 million visitors citywide—surpassing pre-pandemic records. Times Square, the beating heart of Manhattan’s visitor economy, sees an average of 360,000 pedestrians daily, swelling dramatically during the holidays.
The New Year’s Eve event alone delivers a massive economic boost, with past celebrations generating upwards of $150 million in tourism revenue through hotels, dining, retail, and entertainment. Hotels near the square are fully booked, rooftop parties command premium prices, and international arrivals—despite earlier headwinds—have contributed to the festive influx.
“This is the ultimate bucket-list moment,” said one visitor from Europe waiting in the cold. “Everyone wants to be here when the ball drops.”
Heightened Security Across NYC and Times Square
While officials stress there are no specific or credible threats to the event, the NYPD is mounting its largest deployment yet—bigger than last year’s—with thousands of uniformed and plainclothes officers flooding Times Square and surrounding areas. Specialized units including K-9 teams, bomb squads, heavy weapons teams, emergency services, mounted police, harbor units, helicopters, and drones will be on alert, alongside dedicated pickpocket squads and hotel response teams.
A new measure this year introduces mobile secondary screenings inside the viewing pens once crowds are in place, complementing enhanced checks at entry points to prohibit items like backpacks, alcohol, and large bags. Intelligence teams will monitor social media, and fixed and mobile cameras will provide comprehensive oversight. Described by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch as “the biggest security event of the year,” the operation draws on the entire department to ensure safety amid the massive gathering.
A Patriotic Double Celebration
For the first time, the evening will feature a post-midnight tribute organised in partnership with America250, the nonpartisan commission coordinating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Following the classic countdown, more than 3,000 pounds of multicoloured confetti will shower the crowd at midnight. Then, at 12:04 a.m., a second wave of 2,000 pounds of red, white, and blue confetti will fall, accompanied by pyrotechnics and Ray Charles’ rendition of “America the Beautiful.” The building facade of One Times Square will transform into a giant American flag display.
Tom Harris, president of the Times Square Alliance, called it “the perfect moment to unite the crowds in the streets with millions around the world in celebrating our country’s 250 great years.”
The patriotic theme will continue into 2026, with the ball scheduled to drop again on July 3—the eve of Independence Day—in the same style.
Star-Studded Performances and Global Broadcast
The six-hour festivities kick off at 6 p.m. with the lighting and raising of the 12-foot geodesic sphere, adorned with 5,280 Waterford crystals.
Live entertainment includes headline act Diana Ross, alongside performers such as Ana Bárbara, B.o.B, Ciara, Robyn, and others. Ryan Seacrest and Rita Ora host “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2026,” broadcasting coast-to-coast starting at 8 p.m.
The Times Square Alliance offers a commercial-free webcast from 6 p.m., ensuring viewers worldwide can join the countdown.
Practical Tips for Revelers
Security is paramount: the NYPD deploys thousands of officers, drones, K-9 units, and heavy weapons teams. Viewing pens open at 3 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis—no tickets required, but no bathrooms or re-entry once inside.
Dress warmly—temperatures are forecast around 32°F (0°C) at midnight with possible flurries. Public transport is strongly recommended; extensive street closures begin early.
For those avoiding the crowds, alternatives abound: fireworks in Prospect Park, rooftop parties, cruises, or quiet celebrations across the boroughs.
